Zoom Teeth Whitening in Calgary: What to Expect and How Long Results Last

Zoom teeth whitening is an in-office professional whitening treatment that can brighten your teeth by several shades in a single appointment — typically in about an hour. At For Your Smile Dental in Calgary’s Crowfoot NW, we offer Zoom whitening as a fast, effective solution for patients looking to safely lift stains and discolouration. Results can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on your diet, oral hygiene habits, and whether you use maintenance products at home.

What Is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

Zoom is a clinically proven, hydrogen peroxide-based whitening system developed by Philips. It works by applying a professional-strength whitening gel directly to the surface of your teeth. A specially designed LED light is then used to activate the gel, breaking down stain molecules that have built up inside the tooth enamel and dentine over time. Because the treatment is performed under close supervision by a dental professional, Zoom delivers faster and more dramatic results than over-the-counter whitening strips or trays.

Common causes of tooth discolouration that Zoom effectively targets include:

• Coffee, tea, and red wine staining
• Tobacco use
• Age-related yellowing of enamel
• Surface stains from certain foods and sauces

It is important to note that Zoom whitening works on natural tooth enamel only — it will not change the colour of existing dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or composite bonding.

What Happens During a Zoom Whitening Appointment?

A Zoom whitening session at our Calgary clinic is straightforward and comfortable. Here is what you can expect from start to finish:

• Preparation: Your lips and gums are carefully covered with a protective barrier to shield the soft tissues from the whitening gel.
• Gel application: The Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied evenly across the surface of your teeth.
• Light activation: The Zoom LED light is positioned in front of your teeth and left active for approximately 15 minutes. This cycle is typically repeated three to four times.
• Post-treatment application: After the final cycle, a fluoride-infused sensitivity treatment is applied to help remineralise the enamel and reduce any post-whitening sensitivity.

The entire appointment usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes, and most patients leave with teeth that are noticeably several shades brighter.

Will Zoom Whitening Cause Sensitivity?

Some patients experience mild tooth sensitivity or a temporary tingling sensation during or shortly after the treatment — this is completely normal and is caused by the whitening gel temporarily opening the dentinal tubules within the tooth structure. For most patients, any sensitivity resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Using a sensitivity toothpaste in the days leading up to your appointment can help minimise discomfort. Our dental team will also assess your suitability for Zoom whitening before the procedure to ensure the best possible experience.

How Long Do Zoom Whitening Results Last?

Results from a single Zoom whitening session typically last between six months and two years. How long your results last depends largely on your lifestyle habits. Patients who drink coffee or tea daily, smoke, or consume deeply pigmented foods will notice fading sooner than those who do not. To help maintain your results, we recommend:

• Avoiding or limiting staining beverages such as coffee, tea, and red wine for at least 48 hours after treatment
• Brushing twice daily with a whitening toothpaste
• Using take-home whitening trays periodically for maintenance
• Attending your regular hygiene appointments every six months

Am I a Good Candidate for Zoom Whitening?

Most healthy adults with good oral hygiene are excellent candidates for Zoom whitening. However, patients with untreated cavities, active gum disease, or severe enamel erosion will need to address those conditions first. Zoom is not recommended during pregnancy or for patients under the age of 13. A brief consultation with our team will confirm whether Zoom is the right whitening option for you, or whether an alternative approach would deliver better results.
