Zoom teeth whitening in Calgary is one of the fastest ways to brighten your smile — most patients see teeth that are six to ten shades whiter in a single one-hour appointment. The treatment uses a clinically proven hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a specialised Zoom LED light to break down deep stains on enamel and dentine. With proper aftercare, results typically last anywhere from one to three years.
How Does Zoom Teeth Whitening Work?
Zoom is an in-office, chairside whitening system that goes well beyond what over-the-counter whitening strips can achieve. Here is what happens during a typical session:
- Your lips and gums are carefully covered with a protective barrier to shield soft tissue from the whitening agent.
- A hydrogen peroxide-based whitening gel (usually 25–35% concentration) is applied directly to the surfaces of your teeth.
- A Zoom LED lamp is positioned over your teeth, activating the gel and accelerating the breakdown of chromogens — the pigmented molecules responsible for staining.
- This process is typically repeated in three to four 15-minute cycles within the same appointment.
- A post-treatment sensitivity-relief gel is applied to help remineralise enamel and reduce discomfort.
The entire appointment takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, making it an ideal option for patients who want dramatic results without a lengthy treatment plan.
What Types of Stains Does Zoom Treat?
Zoom whitening is most effective on extrinsic stains — discolouration that sits on or near the outer layer of enamel. Common causes include:
- Coffee, tea, and red wine
- Tobacco and smoking
- Certain foods such as berries, curries, and tomato-based sauces
- Natural yellowing from ageing
It is worth noting that Zoom is less effective on intrinsic stains — those caused by tetracycline antibiotic use, fluorosis, or trauma to a tooth. If you have intrinsic discolouration, your dentist may discuss alternative options such as porcelain veneers or bonding. A consultation before your whitening appointment helps set realistic expectations.
What to Expect During and After Your Appointment
Most patients find the Zoom procedure comfortable and straightforward. Some people experience mild tooth sensitivity during or shortly after treatment — this is a normal response as the whitening agent temporarily opens the dentinal tubules. Sensitivity usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief or the sensitivity gel provided by your dental team.
In the 48 hours following your treatment, your teeth are more porous and susceptible to restaining. During this “white diet” window, it is best to avoid:
- Dark-coloured beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and cola
- Richly pigmented foods such as berries, beets, and soy sauce
- Tobacco products of any kind
How Long Do Zoom Whitening Results Last?
Results from a professional Zoom whitening session generally last one to three years, though this varies significantly depending on lifestyle habits and oral hygiene. Patients who drink coffee or tea daily and do not use a straw, or who smoke, may notice fading within six to twelve months. Those who follow aftercare guidelines closely and maintain regular professional cleanings can enjoy noticeably whiter teeth for considerably longer.
To maintain your results, consider:
- Using a whitening toothpaste approved by your dentist
- Drinking staining beverages through a straw
- Scheduling regular hygiene appointments every six months
- Using take-home whitening touch-up trays provided by your dental clinic
Is Zoom Whitening Right for You?
Zoom is safe for most healthy adults, but it is not recommended during pregnancy, for children under 13, or for patients with certain dental restorations such as crowns or veneers on visible front teeth — these will not respond to whitening gel and may appear mismatched after treatment. A pre-whitening dental examination ensures your teeth and gums are in good health before you begin, giving you the best possible outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Zoom whitening appointment take in Calgary?
A Zoom teeth whitening appointment typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes from start to finish. This includes preparation, three to four 15-minute gel activation cycles under the Zoom LED light, and a final sensitivity-relief treatment — all completed in a single visit.
How many shades whiter will my teeth look after Zoom whitening?
Most patients achieve results that are six to ten shades whiter after one Zoom whitening session, though individual results vary depending on the original shade and type of staining. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation based on your specific teeth during a pre-treatment consultation.
Is Zoom teeth whitening painful?
Zoom whitening is not painful for most patients, though some people experience mild tooth sensitivity during or in the 24 to 48 hours following treatment. This sensitivity is temporary and occurs because the whitening gel temporarily opens the dentinal tubules — it can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief or a sensitivity-relief gel applied by your dental team.
How long do Zoom whitening results last?
Results from professional Zoom whitening generally last between one and three years, depending on your diet, oral hygiene routine, and lifestyle habits such as smoking or drinking coffee. Regular touch-ups with take-home whitening trays and routine dental cleanings can help extend and maintain your results significantly.
Can Zoom whitening remove all types of tooth stains?
Zoom whitening is highly effective on extrinsic stains caused by food, beverages, and tobacco — the most common types of tooth discolouration. It is less effective on intrinsic stains caused by tetracycline antibiotics, fluorosis, or dental trauma, and your dentist may recommend alternative cosmetic treatments such as veneers for those cases.
Will Zoom whitening work on my crowns, veneers, or fillings?
No — whitening gel does not alter the colour of dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or composite fillings. If these restorations are on your visible front teeth, they may appear mismatched after whitening, which is why a consultation before treatment is important to plan the right approach for your smile.
